History

Phototype is a third generation family-owned business with a rich, entrepreneurial heritage. Our independent spirit, deeply ingrained service values and aggressive pursuit of new technology have fueled our growth and success over nearly a century.

1919 - Phototype Engraving founded in 1919 in Cincinnati, Ohio as the first business in the region to use revolutionary photo-etching technique.

1950 - First in region to offer powder-less etching

1952 - Began using newest Kodak relief KRP plate

1965 - First in region to offer magnesium plates

1972 - First in region to offer 4/color offset on-press color proofs

1975 - First in region to adopt SWOP color standards

1985 - Reorganized from a unionized company to a non-union company

1986 - First in region to purchase digital scanning and imaging equipment

1970 - Expanded to offer specialized services for packaging design and production

1988 - Opened PhotoArt photography studio

1992 - First in region to offer digital photography

1994 - Opened sister facility in Columbus, Ohio

1996 - Designed and opened world-class flexo platemaking facility

1998 - Installed Cyrel Digital Imager for flexo plates; the sixth machine of its kind to be installed in the US

2002 - Announced NuDot® screening technology

2003 - Launched Gravity (www.gravityisgood.com) brand consultancy and packaging design studio

2005 - Implemented Ghent PDF Workgroup standards for universal graphics data exchange
